Programs for Parents
Many parents are overwhelmed when they first heard that their child is diagnosed. At ASCEND, we are here to help. We recognize the importance of parental involvement and incorporate it into our services.
Many researches have shown that parents’/ caregivers’ involvement in their child’s therapy benefits the child’s language and functioning (Lovaas, 1987). With our programs, parents learn how to help their child overcome the behaviours that stand in the way of a child's learning and how to promote their child’s development through communication and play. As for young adults, parents will be equipped with the tools necessary to promote independence, social skills and decrease disruptive behaviours. Training can take place at the centre or at home to best-fit parents’ needs. Workshops and individualized training can also be arranged accordingly.
Our goal is for families to feel confident and well-prepared to effectively implement knowledge and skills to help their child with special needs to achieve the best possible outcome.
Our program empowers parents to capture teachable moments in daily home routines and apply strategies to manage behavioural challenges.
- Increase learning readiness, sustained focus attention
- Decrease behaviour which hinders learning such as tantrumming, inattention
- Increase initiating communication, social skills, play skills
- Bring it out to the community! Children will learn to use their play/social skills at a playground, visit a mall and order food, take public transportation etc.
