Social Thinking ®
Developed by Michelle Garcia Winner, strategies from Social Thinking ® help learners observe and change their own behaviours according to their current situations and others’ behaviours. Learners learn that a specific set of social behaviours do not apply to all situations and therefore, choose the most appropriate response accordingly.
Tools such as visual cues, video review, video modelling and social behavior mapping can be incorporated into our teaching for some individuals. For instance, a student threw items at the wall after losing a game. Video of the incident can be shown to him afterwards. He can then see how others reacted after he threw items at the wall. Through this activity, he can also learn the possible consequences which may happen after he threw items at the wall (i.e. friends may not want to play a game with him anymore). Visual cues can be used to remind him what he can do when he loses a game. It teaches students’ problem solving skills and social skills in different social situations.
